Understanding users
Design sprints with teens

To better understand the needs, attitudes, and behaviors of current teen users, iiD held a series of design workshops with a total of 87 students in high schools throughout San Francisco. Very early on it became clear through talking with teens that if this was going to be a digital tool for young people, it had to be mobile, social and gamified. The students helped us sketch out ideas for what functionality the app should have. A key learning was that being respectful was deemed “cool” if done in a way that is relevant to them.

Branding the app
A ripple for positive change

The name and brand mark needed to convey the ripple effect of social media activity and how respectful behavior can have a positive influence beyond a user's immediate network. We explored many naming and brand mark options before deciding on the Respect Effect and the ‘ripple’ icon.

The app was designed to be colorful and to engage users on a daily basis. We created a back-end admin system for our client to manage and schedule the posting of daily challenges and moderate the app community. We launched native apps on both iOS and Android with user generated data being posted to a scaleable AWS cloud CDN.
