About Lance

Lance Shields is a fine art photographer in San Francisco, California. He holds a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute, where he studied sculpture and installation art. He was raised in the mountains of San Diego, CA and at the age of twelve, he was introduced to film photography by his science teacher. Throughout the 1990s, he was an installation artist and eventually transitioned to digital in the early 2000s.

Thirty-five years after his first experiments with a film camera, in 2020 he made the decision to return to film photography while also shooting digital. He chooses to photograph the beauty and strange moments of everyday life.

Lance lives in San Francisco with his wife and dog. He has two kids—one an orchestra conductor and another in college studying acting. He works as a design director at Adobe. He is passionate about surfing and exploring the west coast by van.
